7 Things That Will Lead You to the Right Personal Trainer

Choosing the right personal trainer is important in achieving your fitness goals. The positive results of the programmes lie in the core competence of the trainer and your ability to work with him or her.

Here are 7 things to consider in finding a good trainer:

1. Certificate of Competence

One of the first things you should look for is a certificate that would indicate his or hers professional proficiency. The Register of Exercise Professionals or the REPS accredits fitness trainers and other healthcare professionals. Check for other accreditation agencies in your locality. They can provide a sufficient list of accredited trainers.

2. Years of Experience

Training and experience are crucial because you do not want to be working with someone who is inept, do you? The expert advice of the trainer is invaluable. He or she should be able to design a fitness programme that is in accordance with your needs. If you have a special medical condition or trying to recuperate from an injury, your exercising routine must be different from the others. In fact, no two clients are alike and the trainer should be able to provide the special needs of each one.

3. Professional Affiliations and Continuing Education

Like any other profession, continuous training keeps the trainer up-to-date with the latest trends in the field, new techniques and medical breakthroughs that could improve his or hers service. Being a member of a community of other trainers is not only a good way for the trainer to receive support from peers. It is also a good opportunity to exchange tips and ideas useful in the practice of the profession. All these point out to your trainer being proactive and concerned at improving his skills to give his or hers clients the best possible service there is.

4. A University Education

It would be nice if the trainer has an educational background that is related to the field (preferably a bachelor’s degree). Having a solid education about fitness and exercise supports a fitness trainer’s competence.

5. Referrals are important

Referrals are a good indication of the service of the personal trainer. Previous clients putting in good words for the trainer speaks volume about the quality and effectiveness of the service. This means they have been, most of the time, satisfied with the service and the result.

6. Reasonable Fees

Reasonability of price is not the same to all people. Because they have different needs, price is not the ultimate deciding factor. One client is maybe willing to take a steep price in exchange of a quality service while another may try to look for another trainer with a cheaper price. At whatever price, you should be able to see positive results.

7. Schedule of Consultation or Meet-ups

A schedule that is agreeable to both of you influences the success of this collaboration. When schedule is agreed, this allows both of you to honor the schedule.

When choosing a personal trainer, consider someone whom you can work with and who is willing to work with you.
